Jamaica Bacchanal Carnival takes place annually starting in February and continuing for about 8 weeks, concluding on the weekend after Easter (mid April). 2015 marked the 27th anniversary of the Jamaica Bacchanal Carnival. It was introduced to the Jamaicans in 1989 by a group of carnival loving revelers who made annual trips to party in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, the carnival capital of the Caribbean. It is based on the Trinidad Carnival, but with local themes and experiences.
The Jamaica Bacchanal Carnival is growing every year, and is now the seen as the islands biggest event attracting more than 100,000 people, locally and from abroad, and bringing in the best of the island and Caribbean entertainers. Most of the big events are held during the Easter week. The carnival atmosphere is spread all over the island, although the main events take place in the capital, Kingston, and also in Negril and Montego Bay.
There is a children’s parade during the Carnival, but the highlight of the event is the adult’s parade with the colourful costumes, which takes place on the last day of the festivities and is held in Beach J’ouvert. The timing of the carnival is designed so as not to compete with Trinidad and many of the traditional carnivals which take place just before lent, and also the importance of this religious period in Jamaica.
