Miami Broward Carnival takes place every year in early October, on the Sunday before Columbus Day. It is one of the biggest carnivals in North America and often considered to be one the best in the United States. It also has the advantage of the warm Caribbean weather.
The festivities starts with a Junior Carnival which takes place on the Sunday before the Carnival Sunday. The carnival weekend includes a number of activities which spectators are welcome to take part in, including parades of opulent and colorful costumes, bands parties, fetes, arts and crafts, and samples of food and drink from the Caribbean islands.
The highlight of the event is a concert which is held on the Sunday. The weekend also includes competitions where large cash prizes can be won, e.g.,Band of the Year competition, King, Queens and Individuals Show with costume competitions, and a Steel Band Panorama competition.
